PINEHURST — FirstHealth of the Carolinas is welcoming an experienced nurse practitioner to the Heart Failure Clinic at Reid Heart Center.
Lynne Mabe, DNP, has worked as a nurse practitioner in FirstHealth hospitals in Pinehurst, Richmond and Raeford, and she will now focus on helping heart failure patients manage their complex disease.
Mabe earned her Doctorate of Nursing from the University of Miami in 2018 and her Master of Nursing from Winston-Salem State University in 2011.
Mabe said her aunt inspired her to pursue a career in medicine.
“I remember talking to my dad about Aunt Jennifer’s job and I told myself in 9th grade that I wanted to be a nurse and take care of patients like she did,” Mabe recalled. “My class got to put our career goals and our future goals in a 50-year time capsule in Rockingham. I put married with three kids and that I wanted to be a nurse. All those goals have come to fruition.”
FirstHealth opened its Heart Failure Clinic in early 2020. Once a patient is referred to the clinic, they will undergo an extensive evaluation by a team of experts in the management of heart failure and receive appropriate therapeutic options and educational needs that will help them better understand and actively manage their heart failure.
The goal of the clinic is to minimize rehospitalization, reduce mortality and improve the quality of life for patients with heart failure.
Mabe said she’s excited to make a difference in people’s lives.
“My father suffered from congestive heart failure for many years before he passed away, but because he had a great group of providers, family support and self-awareness of the disease, he never spent one day in the hospital related to a congestive heart failure exacerbation,” Mabe said. “When I went back to school to get my DNP at the University of Miami, my dissertation was on reducing congestive heart failure readmission rates in rural communities. I want my patients to have the same goals as my father did – a good quality of life.”
Outside of work, Mabe said she enjoys traveling with her family and college football.
